Slow Down, Make Life Count

So many times, I’ve hurried through life. Rushing from one place to the next, checking off errands, getting things done, then bragging about my accomplishments at the end of the day.

I wonder how much I’ve missed by having this approach to life. What could I have learned or experienced if I had just slowed down a little?

Exactly three years ago today, on April 20, 2020, I walked into a respiratory clinic in acute respiratory distress. Between the pandemic and my unrelated medical crisis, I had no choice but to slow down.

Being still is not something I do well. I’ve always been full speed ahead, always busy. But during my brush with death and forced slow-down, God showed me how critical slowing down is and how essential it is to make the most of each moment.

Our lives can be more fulfilling and satisfying when we slow down and make each moment count.

1. It allows us to be present in the moment

When we’re constantly rushing from one thing to the next, it’s easy to lose sight of the present moment. We’re so focused on what we need to do next or what we should have done differently in the past that we forget to appreciate the here and now.

By slowing down, we can take a deep breath and be fully present in the moment. We can enjoy the simple pleasures of life, like the beauty of God’s creation and the warmth of the sun on our skin.

2. It reduces stress and anxiety

When we’re constantly in a hurry, our bodies are flooded with stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This can lead to a wide range of health problems, including anxiety, depression, and even heart disease. By slowing down and taking the time to relax, we can reduce our stress levels and improve our overall well-being.

3. It allows us to focus on what’s important

When rushing through life, it’s easy to get distracted by trivial things that don’t really matter. By slowing down, we can focus on what’s truly important to us, whether that’s spending time with loved ones, pursuing our passions, taking care of ourselves, or growing in our faith. We can also use our time to share the love of Jesus with others by being present and attentive to their needs instead of being focused on our to-do list.

So how can we change our behavior?

1. Practice mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment, without judgment. By practicing mindfulness, we can learn to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life.

Try taking a few deep breaths, focusing on the sensation of the air moving in and out of your body. Notice the sounds and smells around you, and let yourself be fully present in the moment.

2. Take breaks

It’s important to take breaks throughout the day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Use this time to do something that relaxes you, whether that’s taking a walk, reading a book, praying, or simply sitting quietly and breathing.

3. Prioritize your time

Think about what’s truly important to you, and prioritize your time accordingly. If spending time with family is a top priority, make sure you schedule regular family outings or game nights. If pursuing a particular hobby brings you joy, set aside time each week to work on it. If your health and wellness need some extra attention, block space on your calendar to focus on your self-care. And if you enjoy volunteering, don’t let that drift away in your sea of busyness.

Slowing down and making life count are essential for our overall well-being and happiness. By being present in the moment, reducing stress and anxiety, and focusing on what’s truly important, we can live more fulfilling and satisfying lives. Lives that are more glorifying to God.

As I’ve spent the day reflecting on the past three years of my life, I’ve been reminded that my time on earth is limited. I have only a blink of His eternal eyes to make an impact for the Kingdom, and that cannot happen if I don’t slow down and make every moment count.

So each day, I will commit to making the best of every moment. I will slow down, take a deep breath, and enjoy the journey. And I will continue to praise God for another opportunity to bring Him glory.

Will you join me?
