The Sustainer
Psalm 55:22
Cast your cares on the Lord
and he will sustain you;
he will never let
the righteous be shaken.

I sat in the small living room of my childhood home with my mother and sister at my dad’s bedside. My heart fell to pieces as I looked upon this man who had become only a shell of himself. Cancer had ravished his once strong body, and our time together was coming to an end.

It was late Friday evening. My sister and I had moved Mom’s recliner close to Dad’s side, hoping she would be able to close her eyes and find rest. It was bitter cold outside, but the peacefulness of the snow-covered ground delivered tranquility. Mom had finally relaxed enough to sleep, gripping her soulmate’s hand tightly.

With a sudden jolt, she sat up and whispered, “Girls.”

Nothing more needed to be said. My sister and I knew our daddy had taken his last breath on earth and his first in heaven, leaving us behind with only our memories of him.

In moments like these, we can become burdened with sadness, and it’s difficult to cast our cares on the Lord. However, in Psalm 55, that’s what we’ve been instructed to do. But as God so often does, He follows this instruction with a promise– He will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.

Of course, you will face heartache in your life. But, even so, the Lord will sustain you as you mend. Trust Him to carry you through your valleys. For He is your hope for tomorrow, your Healer and Protector.

What is shaking you today? What is causing you pain or sorrow? Cast your cares on the Lord, and he will sustain you through whatever you are facing at this moment.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I cast all my cares on you. I trust you to give me strength. When I feel shaken, remind me I am your child and your love for me is more profound than I can begin to imagine. I trust you to help me carry my burdens. Thank you that you are The Sustainer.

Amen
